The embryonic phase and its implication in the hatchling size and 1 condition of Atlantic bobtail squid

چکیده
Early life stages of cephalopods are somewhat complex due to the life 15 history strategy or species specificity of generalized ontogenetic patterns and 16 processes. This work aimed to determine the time length of embryonic development 17 at different temperatures, and if the egg size is a determinant of hatchling size in 18 Sepiola atlantica d ́Orbigny, 1839-1842. Successful hatching occurred in 98.5 to 100 % 19 of the eggs for each female. As seen in other coleoid cephalopods, temperature 20 determines the amount of time for embryonic development in S. atlantica, and the 21 Manuscript Click here to download Manuscript: Paper Development revision.docx Click here to view linked References 2 obtained data was very similar to other coleoid cephalopods. Developmental times 22 for temperatures at 13 ± 0.4 oC, 18 ± 0.3oC and 16.4 ± 1.1oC were 61.8 ± 3.8, 22.6 ± 1.7 23 and 40.1 ± 4.8 days. The duration of embryonic development and hatchling mantle 24 length was not strictly related. The egg volume was positively related to hatchling 25 mantle length. Our results provide new records on the duration of embryogenesis 26 and other information on reproductive patterns in this species. Some hatching and 27 post-hatching behaviour are shown and discussed. 28 29

متن کاملHawaiian bobtail squid
What is a bobtail squid? Euprymna scolopes (Figure 1) is a small sepiolid squid, or bobtail squid, occurring in the marine coastal environment of the Hawaiian archipelago. Whereas most other squid are always out and about, the bobtail squid buries itself in the sand during its daylight quiescent period. Then, at night, individuals of this species emerge from the sand to forage on prey, such as ...
